Founder of Cancer United Recognised with Prestigious British Empire Medal in New Year's Honours List 2024

Cancer United is thrilled to announce that its Founder, Jan Sheward has been recognised for her outstanding contributions to the area of support for people with cancer in West Sussex and has been granted the esteemed 'Medal of the Order of the British Empire' (BEM) in the prestigious New Year's Honours List 2024, published by the London Gazette on 30th December 2023.

His Majesty the King has graciously approved Jan Sheward for this esteemed honour, reflecting her exceptional dedication to improving the lives of those affected by cancer. This recognition underscores her tireless efforts and unwavering commitment to enhancing cancer care, support and advocacy in our community.

This is the second time that Jan, the visionary founder of our organisation, has been honoured. She was recognised previously in 2022 as a Platinum Champion by her then Royal Highness The Duchess of Cornwall (now Queen Camilla) for her outstanding contribution as a volunteer in the year of Her (Late) Majesty the Queen's Platinum Jubilee.

Under Jan Sheward's inspiring leadership, Cancer United has grown to become a beacon of hope and support for countless individuals struggling with the challenges of cancer. Her relentless pursuit of excellence in cancer care and in particular the benefits of cancer specific exercise and the joy of music and singing has touched the lives of many, and this recognition is a testament to her remarkable achievements.

Jan Sheward expressed her gratitude, saying, "I am deeply humbled and honoured to receive 'the Medal of the Order of the British Empire' which is a testament to the incredible work of the entire Cancer United team, our Trustees, dedicated volunteers and to the amazing individuals and families we serve. Together, we have made a significant and positive impact on the changing views of cancer support by the provision of facilities for pre-habilitation and rehabilitation through cancer specific exercise, social interaction, music and singing and I am committed to continuing this vitally important work."

The Medal of the Order of the British Empire is awarded to individuals who have made exceptional contributions to the community, and Jan Sheward has certainly exemplified this commitment through her leadership and dedication to Cancer United.

The Charity's Trustees and the team at Cancer United extent their warmest congratulations to our founder Jan Sheward for this well deserved honour. We look forward to continuing our mission of providing support, hope and strength to those affected by cancer under her inspirational guidance and leadership.
