CANCER UNITED Overview: CUFITTER is Cancer United’s exercise initiative launched in 2014 and since October 2015 offering cancer specific exercise from the UK’S first dedicated exercise space for cancer patients.  We work with cancer patients from diagnosis onwards who have been referred by University Hospital Sussex NHS Trust and have received become part of the prehabilitation project at University Hospital Southampton.  We also accept self-referrals. We believe in the transformative power of exercise and its ability to enhance the physical and emotional well-being of individuals on their cancer journey and are now seeking a new personal trainer/gym Instructor to join our team.

Position Overview: As a CUFITTER instructor, you will play a crucial role in providing CUFITTER’s specialised exercise classes and support to individuals affected by cancer. You will work closely CUFITTER members in the classes to which they have been signposted which will address their unique needs and limitations, helping them build strength, improve flexibility, and enhance their overall quality of life.

Responsibilities:

  1. Assessment:

  • New members will have undergone an assessment of their physical abilities, medical history, and treatment side effects.

  • They will have been signposted to the classes which are safe, effective, and tailored to each new member’s specific needs and goals.

  • You will monitor their progress in an environment which is encouraging and in which they feel safe and at ease and highlighting any adjustments you feel are needed to any members to the lead instructor.

  1. Instruction and Guidance:

  • Take group exercise sessions, providing clear instructions and demonstrations while taking care to ensure that all members are exercising correctly and safely.

  • Offer guidance and support during workouts, ensuring proper technique and safety precautions are followed.

  • Educate members about the benefits of exercise in managing cancer-related symptoms and improving overall well-being.

3.      Motivation:

  1. Be able to encourage and motivate members to stay committed to their exercise routines, even during challenging times. Consistency being the watch word for success.

  2. Encourage a situation whereby members are motivated to take control of their health and fitness.

  3. Celebrate improvements in fitness levels, achievements, and milestones along their journey towards improving their physical and mental wellbeing.

 

  1. Commitment and Communication:

  • Be able to work as part of the team with commitment; communication with the lead instructor and the office being a priority to ensure the smooth running of the timetable.

 

Qualifications:

  • Personal Trainer or Fitness Instructor from a recognised organisation.

  • Exercise referral from a recognised organisation.

  • Additional certification or training in Cancer Exercise or Oncology exercise, would be an advantage, training could be provided for the right candidate.

  • Previous experience working with individuals affected by cancer or other chronic health conditions is desirable.

  • Strong knowledge of exercise physiology, anatomy, and biomechanics

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Compassionate, with a genuine desire to make a positive impact in the lives of cancer patients.

  • Ability to adapt to following the CUFITTER exercise sessions which has been based on clients' individual needs, limitations, and treatment protocols.

  • Commitment to maintaining confidentiality and adhering to professional ethics and standards.

  • Must have a good sense of humour and the ability to know when to use that within a class situation.
