Your Programme

Your specific fitness and

support plan will help improve

your fitness and mobility which may help the prevention of recurrence.

At the point of diagnosis, we offer an initial free consultation and assessment, with our lead CUFITTER exercise specialist, to identify which support and exercise interventions are best suited to aid your cancer journey.

Our CUFITTER exercise specialists not only understand what you need to support your physical health and fitness, they also understand what it takes to deal with the emotional effects of cancer.

  • Why do I need to exercise and what are the benefits of CUFITTER?
Clinical research now supports the view that if people reach a certain level of physical activity - which can be relatively modest - they will more than double their chances of surviving cancer. Research is continuing to prove that not only is physical activity feasible for cancer patients; resistance (strength) training is actually necessary to: * Increase muscle strength * Increase exercise stamina * Improve the immune system * Reduce fatigue * Increase bone density * Help improve psychological well being * Help reduce the side effects of treatment * Increase mobility, balance, flexibility and co-ordination
  • Why CUFITTER?
CUFITTER Self Referral Exercise programme is unique as it is the only programme which offers a suite of cancer-specific exercise options to support you at every stage of your cancer journey from diagnosis and beyond. The CUFITTER environment will cater for cancer patients from diagnosis onwards; those who are preparing for treatment or for those undergoing treatment and for those who are post their treatment.
  • What are the CUFITTER objectives?
The CUFITTER objectives are: * To improve the health and wellbeing of its members. * To improve the health of those members with a long term health conditions. * To reduce the number of deaths from cancer. * To improve the quality of life and life expectancy of all our members.
  • Are the CUFITTER trainers qualified?
All CUFITTER cancer exercise specialists must successfully undergo and pass the CUFITTER Award In Applied Delivery Of Cancer Exercise before they are able to work with cancer patients. The criteria for taking the qualification is that they must already hold a Level 3 Personal Training qualification as a minimum.
  • Where are we based?
The CUFITTER gym is based in Angmering, West Sussex and is in the grounds of a private house called Millfield House. The full address is: Cancer United Millfield House Station Road Angmering West Sussex BN16 4HY
  • What is the cost?
Currently the cost per CUFITTER class is a minimal £5 per session. We ask that you sign up for the first four classes at your consultation so that you can start to feel the benefits of the specific cancer exercise sessions immediately.
  • How long can I attend the CUFITTER gym?
There is no expiry time-frame to your exercise programmes. You can attend CUFITTER classes for as long as you wish and we encourage you to do this.
  • How do I sign up?
  • What happens at the consultation?
We will ask you to have completed a medical questionnaire and mental wellbeing form to bring with you to your consultation. The cancer exercise specialist will go through the forms with you to understand where you are with you journey and what treatment you have had or are on. Each consultation lasts between 30-40 minutes and will take either on zoom or face to face in the gym. If the consultation is via zoom you will be asked to email your forms to us in advance.
  • How do I book a class?
At your consultation you will be given access to a studio booking platform which means you are in complete control of the classes that you wish to book through the week according to your specific cancer exercise plan.
  • Do we offer classes online?
Yes, we offer zoom options for members who wish to attend classes where they will see the cancer exercise specialist instructing them from our CUFITTER gym. The classes will be cancer specific and you will have been sign posted to them at your consultation. If you prefer to exercise face to face, all of our classes take place in the studio.
  • Is it safe to exercise during my cancer treatment?
Our clinical stakeholders are 100% supportive of you exercising whilst you are undergoing treatment. Clinicians now support the view that exercise is essential to help maintain your strength and fitness and manage some of the side effects of your treatment. You will receive an appropriate exercise plan from our cancer exercise specialist at your consultation who is there to help and support you throughout your journey.
  • What happens if I have other health conditions or limitations as well as cancer?
All our cancer exercise specialists are trained to help you deal with any co-morbidities you may have as well as having cancer. All instructors are trained to make adaptations to allow you to exercise safely.
  • If I'm suffering with fatigue should I still exercise?
Common side effects of cancer treatment are fatigue and tiredness. Not exercising will not improve this and will lead to de-conditioning which in turn will result in reduced strength and fitness. It is very important that you continue to exercise which will help you manage and control your symptoms. Your CUFITTER cancer exercise specialist will help, support and encourage you to work at your own level whilst attending the classes you have been signposted to.
  • Can I refer myself or do I have to be referred by a health professional?
Although your clinician may offer you a referral to CUFITTER, you can refer yourself.
